virtual LL 2013

Since the early 90s, Lesbian Looks has been bringing audiences to the University of Arizona campus, and to community venues including the Loft Cinema, the Screening Room, the Grand Cinemas Crossroads 6, and the Wingspan LGBT community center, to watch movies together that could not otherwise be seen in Tucson. In 2011, in addition to on- and off-campus screenings, we added a new location: your computer.

Virtual Lesbian Looks offers a portal to the exciting new world of made-for-the-web programming. When we started Lesbian Looks in 1993, you could count the number of lesbian-themed feature films on one hand, and the number of television shows with a lesbian character (usually a special guest on one episode) on the other. Today, you can find dozens of programs online, created by LGBT filmmakers for LGBT audiences.

In today's media landscape, in which iTunes, YouTube and Hulu have joined network and cable programming in the competition for viewer attention, web-based series present an exciting new avenue for both veteran and emerging filmmakers to launch fresh projects, develop a fan base, and sometimes parlay a low-budget experiment into a television deal or feature film.

I Hate Tommy Finch

I Hate Tommy Finch is a one-act, two-woman, all-queer play about the roller coaster friendship of two girls from ages 8 to 35. They navigate not only run-of-the-mill coming-of age-issues (changing bodies, bullies, parent problems, losing their virginity, etc.) but questions about their own (and each other's) sexuality. Sexy, sassy, and sophisticated, I Hate Tommy Finch is sort of like the John Hughes movie every lesbian wished for…and then some.

The Throwaways

When newly out teen Olivia loses her family, her home, and her future in one fell swoop, she's taken in by a resilient group of lesbian misfits. Things can only get better. Right? Despite the recent repeal of DADT and President Obama's support of gay marriage, gay kids are still being bullied, harassed, and thrown out of their homes because of their sexuality. The Throwaways follows straight-A, straight-laced, and anything but straight Olivia on her quest to find a safe place to be herself. The Throwaways showcases the still tenuous nature of LGBT acceptance in the US as well as the comedy and comfort to be found in new friends and allies.

Once You Leave

Lost and alone, Kayla must contemplate her next move. Where do you go when the road has run out? How did she get here? She retraces her steps, haunted by shadows of her past and confronted by demons in her present. On the road she must face the reality of lost, unrequited love, the dark hearts of men and dream-shattering disappointment. Will Kayla find the strength to go on, to find herself, to find her home? They say you can never go home again, Once You Leave.

Good People in Love

Good People in Love is a 5 part dramatic mini series from Tina Cesa Ward. A dinner party to celebrate an engagement turns into a night of manipulation, dissection and revelation when the story's narrators, Scott and Sarah set out to prove their distinct points of view on love using the party's two couples as unwitting examples opening up a pandora's box of trouble for everyone.

Mya & Her Moms

Mya is, in many ways, a typical 8-year-old girl. She takes piano lessons, loves to read, and enjoys the girl scouts. She has two parents who love her and want the best for her. What's not so typical, is that both her parents are moms. Take a peek into the daily lives of Lisa, Laura and their daughter Mya, and see if you can spot the differences between this family and any other.
